With interest in electric trucks on the rise, Rivian gets set for business in Seattle area

Rivian, the California-based electric vehicle startup that some call the "Tesla of Trucks," is setting up a showroom in Seattle and a service center in nearby Bellevue for this year's scheduled rollout of its R1T all-electric pickup truck and R1S sport utility vehicle.

The company's Puget Sound presence is apt, considering that Seattle-based Amazon is one of Rivian's marquee investors and has pledged to buy 100,000 electric vans from Rivian for its nationwide delivery fleet. Last month, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos showed off the R1T in a video made for his Blue Origin space venture.

The R1T truck, which carries a base list price starting at $67,500, is due to be delivered beginning in June. The all-electric R1S, priced at $70,000 and up, is scheduled to roll out in August. InsideEVs reports that Rivian has a full-up waiting list of about 30,000 customers for the first wave of deliveries. Deposits of $1,000 continue to be taken for later rounds.

Rivian says it's opening 10 showrooms and 41 service centers nationwide this year.

In March, the Daily Journal of Commerce reported that Rivian's Seattle showroom will be in the one-time home of the Federal Army & Navy Surplus Store — in the Belltown neighborhood, not far from Pike Place Market and the Amazon Spheres. Technically speaking, Rivian's showroom isn't the same as a dealership: Customers will be able to see the vehicles up close and take a test drive, but they won't be able to drive a truck off the lot. Instead, purchases will be made online.

This week, we spotted what appears to be a Rivian service center taking shape on Bellevue's Auto Row, near the intersection of Northeast Eighth Street and 116th Avenue Northeast. A check of Rivian's hiring plans for Seattle and Bellevue confirmed the impression left by the Rivian signage at the construction site.

We've reached out to Rivian and will update this report with anything we hear back.

Electric trucks took the spotlight in the automotive world this week, thanks to Ford's all-electric F-150 Lightning pickup. Today, Ford CEO Jim Farley told CNBC that the company took 20,000 reservations for the truck in the 12 hours since its big reveal on Wednesday night. Customers were required to put down a refundable $100 deposit. For what it's worth, pricing for the Lightning starts at about $40,000 for the entry-level model, with deliveries set to begin next spring.

"With 20,000 orders already, we're off to the races," Farley said.

Rivian and Ford aren't the only horses in this race: Tesla, GM and a host of startups are also planning to field electric trucks.

In 2019, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made a splash (and made a couple of windows crash) at the unveiling of his company's all-electric Cybertruck. Tesla is now thought to have at least half a million reservations (with refundable $100 deposits) for an edgy-looking vehicle that Musk said is "the truck you want in the apocalypse."

At the unveiling, Musk said the first dual-motor Cybertrucks would be delivered in late 2021, with the single-motor version (priced at about $40,000) rolling out a year later. Some reports suggest that Cybertruck deliveries won't begin until 2022 — but this week, the word on the tweet is that Tesla is still planning for limited production late this year.

Apple just released iOS 14.7 public beta 1 so all iPhone users can try it

Apple surprised us all on Wednesday when it released the first public betas of iOS 14.7 for the iPhone and iPadOS 14.7 for the iPad. It was especially surprising because it happened so late in the day instead of around 1:00 PM ET, which is when most iOS betas are released. And on top of all that, Apple hasn’t even released iOS 14.6 to the public yet, as the release candidate only rolled out this past Monday. Now that the developer betas of iOS 14.7 and iPadOS 14.7 have been released though, it should come as less of a surprise that Apple is rolling out another round of betas right now.

That’s right, iOS 14.7 public beta 1 and iPadOS 14.7 public beta 1 are both now available to download, so anyone can try out Apple’s latest software instead of just developers.

Nearly 26 years after starting its journey, Internet Explorer is finally done exploring. Microsoft announced this week that the Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired and go out of support for certain versions of Windows 10 on June 15th, 2022. This will not affect the Long-Term Servicing Channel of Windows 10, but every consumer copy of the operating system will end support for Internet Explorer, including Windows 10 Home and Pro.

Some advertisers are spending more on Android since Apple’s new anti-tracking feature debuted

Apple enabled a few years ago the anti-tracking feature that Facebook is so terrified of. The iOS 14.5's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) forces all app developers to ask permission for tracking users across iPhone and iPad apps and services. It's the first time companies like Facebook have had to ask for explicit consent from users to collect the kind of user data points that would help them sell more expensive personalized ads to advertisers.

A recent report from an analytics firm showed that most iPhone and iPad users in the US and abroad will opt-out of data tracking, indicating that Facebook and others are right to worry about profiling users for advertising purposes. A new study seems to confirm the concerns in the advertising industry, as some companies are already willing to spend more money on Android now that iOS 14.5 has rolled out. But the report suggests that Apple's anti-tracking technology might not be such a big problem.

Apple last month officially introduced AirTag, a Bluetooth-enabled tracker designed to help users locate items like handbags, wallets, backpacks, and luggage when they go missing. Like any tracking device, Apple’s AirTag naturally introduces a number of privacy concerns. Do you ever feel caught in a loop at work? New research shows you're not alone; the average American office worker wastes five hours a week on tasks they think could be automated. That's more than two business weeks per year, per person, of lost productivity.

A new study polled 2,000 American office workers that are working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic about how their roles have changed over the past year and how they see their role evolving in the future.

Seven in 10 respondents said they wish they had more time to work on more high-value tasks and responsibilities into their day-to-day routine.

And as their roles currently stand, 69% feel like they're constantly doing the same tasks over and over again at work and 68% wish their job wasn't so monotonous.

One way respondents are trying to boost their productivity at work is learning about artificial intelligence (35%) and learning skills related to robotic process automation (33%).

Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of UiPath, the survey found the majority of respondents (65%) agreed that skills related to machine learning and AI would be beneficial to their careers in the long run.

Just over a third (36%) of respondents shared their employers invested in automation software for the first time this year.

Fifty-two percent of those surveyed shared they specifically trained in automation over the past year, and of these respondents, 94% agreed this has improved their job performance.

For those who haven't trained in automation (just over 700 respondents), 45% of them agreed learning automation software would improve their job performance.

"Automation solves for two business challenges: employee engagement and efficiency," said Tom Clancy, SVP of Learning, UiPath. "Automation enables people to be more productive, while also freeing them up to focus on the work they feel truly adds value to their organization. They want to work on items requiring creativity, collaboration, and strategic thinking. We've found that job performance – and employee experience – improves dramatically when employees are able to leverage automation."

Outside of automation specifically, 65% of respondents overall agreed that they'd be more willing to continue working at a company that offered opportunities to learn new skills and 72% think they'd be more productive at their job if they learned new skills.

Overall, 69% of respondents said their on-the-job skills have improved over the past year and 87% have learned new skills while working from home during the pandemic.

Four in five respondents also feel more confident in their jobs now compared to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and 65% said the top thing that made them feel more confident on the job was learning new skills.

Other big developments that occurred over the past year included promotions (58%), gaining more responsibility (56%) and earning raises (56%).

Just over a quarter of respondents also said they've become more proficient in their day-to-day routines at work.

Forty-two percent of respondents developed leadership or management training, and 40% have learned data analytics. Other skills including presentation and multimedia design and editing skills, and a third of respondents even learned how to code.

"Enterprise demand for digital technologies means companies are seeking employees familiar with automation, AI, and other digital tools," said Clancy. "Access to, and training on, these technologies is increasingly valuable for employees to be successful in the workplace and to advance their careers."

American men look back on classic hairstyles after 75% have forgone professional hair care due to the pandemic

It's synonymous with parties for a reason: one in five American men are ready for the mullet to make an official comeback.

In a survey of 2,000 men, 20% said that if they could bring one popular hairstyle from a bygone decade back into fashion, it would be the classic '80s mullet, followed by '90s 'curtain bangs' (15%) and the 2010s undercut (10%). 

But even those polled admit that the infamous bi-level look isn't for everyone; in a ranking of various hair trends, respondents found undercuts, curtain bangs and the '00s "shag" haircut to be more universally flattering 'dos.

And even though 39% of men have dabbled in adding highlights to their hair — making it the most popular color technique among those polled — it was also the least-liked hair trend of the entire survey, ranked just under the infamous "frosted tips" look. 

It's not surprising that men have tried out some fads they ended up hating later; 55% admitted they want to change up their look but are afraid to try something new, while another 47% don't know what hairstyles would look good on them.

However, of the two-thirds of men who've experimented with a hair trend they were later embarrassed by, only a third say they regretted it afterwards.

Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Sport Clips Haircuts, the survey also revealed that men are experiencing a lot of similarly intense emotions about their post-pandemic haircut.

Not surprisingly, "relief" topped the list for 36% of men, while 32% also described themselves as "excited."

During the shutdowns and social distancing measures of the COVID-19 pandemic, 75% of men chose to forgo professional hair maintenance.

One in four men instead tried cutting their hair themselves — despite the fact that 55% don't think they do a good job at self-cuts — while 27% enlisted the help of a friend or family member.

Another 23% simply let their hair grow out, which may be why long-haired heartthrobs like 'Aquaman' star Jason Momoa and singing sensation Harry Styles dominated the survey's list of biggest celebrity hair inspirations. 

"While we're seeing a lot of longer hairstyles in our stores, the truth is that styling men’s hair, no matter the length, can be more complicated than it may seem," explains Stacia Kelley, Sport Clips Artistic Director and stylist. "Longer hair still requires regular trims, shaping and home maintenance with high-quality products, such as conditioners to avoid breakage or light-hold texture creams that can give the hair some weight and tact." 

"Ultimately, communication with your stylist is key," she added. "And if you're growing your hair out, remember that it's a marathon and not a sprint!" 

With the increase of social distanced safety protocols and vaccine distributions, however, men are rediscovering more options for hair care.

Of the half of respondents who've already visited a barber since the pandemic first began, 85% cited it as a positive experience, with 27% describing it as "amazing." 

In fact, one in three respondents say that getting a new haircut makes them feel "smarter," while one in four admit to feeling like "a better person" afterward.

Twelve percent even said they feel more inspired to ask for a raise after a haircut, results indicate.

"In the past year, a lot of men have been experimenting with new hairstyles while stuck at home," said Edward Logan, president and CEO of Sport Clips Haircuts. “Although men may not always know the exact look they want when they come in for a haircut, guys know they want a positive experience that stays with them after they walk out the door."

For the typical American man, that post-haircut confidence boost lasts just under five days on average.

Half of Americans say their favorite local business has closed down due to the pandemic

A new study has found half of Americans have witnessed their favorite local businesses close down because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A survey of 2,000 general population Americans found 68% of respondents personally know a local business owner who was impacted by the pandemic. The most impacted businesses, they said, included cafes (62%), retail shops (58%), gaming shops (55%) and book stores (54%).

While a majority (71%) want to see small businesses in their community thrive, nearly two-thirds (62%) have witnessed their favorite local businesses struggle to pay rent or pay employees.

On average, respondents can name two locally-owned businesses in their community that were rejected from receiving a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) grant.

Commissioned by Templeton Distillery and conducted by OnePoll, the study also found the pandemic has had a major impact on how often 65% of people shop locally.

Three in five (63%) of those surveyed said they don't mind paying more than retail value for a product if they're getting it from a local business. Since the pandemic began, 66% have been ordering and shopping more frequently from local businesses.

Yet their reasoning for shopping local isn't purely tied to the pandemic. Forty-nine percent of local shoppers do so because they genuinely believe locally-made products have better quality. Other reasons include knowing the business owner (47%) and knowing the employees (45%).

 

 

Nearly seven in 10 (69%) believe their community would never be the same without small businesses.

In order to help keep local businesses afloat, 48% of people said they donate an average $92 to their favorite shops and business owners.

“Small businesses are the backbone of towns and cities around the country,” said Templeton Distillery Co-founder Keith Kerkhoff. "Templeton, Iowa is one such small town. With just over 300 people, the town continues to be ignited by the spark of simple business ideas that can last for more than 100 years. We want to celebrate the legacy of local businesses everywhere that are just as ignited, while also looking ahead to the exciting future as these businesses bounce back.”

Over half (53%) of Americans have seriously thought about how they can help local businesses post-pandemic, including increased tipping.

Fifty-eight percent of people said they tip more for food services now than they did before the pandemic, and 88% said they plan to continue tipping more after the pandemic comes to an end.

Other ways people are considering to help include donating to a business' grassroots fundraiser (53%), volunteer work with the business to maintain it (49%) and exclusively shopping local (48%).

More than half (55%) said they have sworn off ever going to a big chain store again because of the impact the pandemic has had on local and small businesses.

"It is incredibly important right now to give back to the small businesses in our communities, especially after all they have been through during the pandemic,” added Kerkhoff. "We could not think of a better way to honor our heritage than by supporting these businesses with our Templeton Distillery Entrepreneur's Grant program.”

Research reveals well-done steak is a deal breaker for many Americans

Is a well-done steak on a first date a dealbreaker? Sure is, say half of all Americans. 

In a recent survey of 2,000 respondents, 53% claim they wouldn't date someone who liked their steak prepared in a different way than they did. 

That goes double for people in the Northeast, 59% of whom judge everyone for their steak choices, not just potential romantic partners.

Meanwhile, in the Midwest, people there were most likely to say (62%) they'll eat whatever is put in front of them regardless of how it's cooked — but they're also the least likely to leave it up to chance.

In fact, three out of four Midwesterners insist on manning the grill themselves at barbecues and other friendly gatherings, as well as seven in 10 men compared to half of all women. 

Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of JBS USA, the survey found plenty of other ways that various regions across the country differ in terms of their meat-eating habits.

The Northeast appears to eat steak more frequently than everywhere else, roughly seven times a month compared to the national average of five. 

They also consume the most of it, too — around 16 oz a month, compared to 13 in the South, 11 in the West, and 10 in the Midwest.

At the same time, Northeasterners know the least about cooking steak; one out of five say they've never actually prepared one on their own before.

On the other side of the country, West Coast residents appear to be the least judgmental about steak preferences across the board. 

That's likely because almost three times as many vegetarians live there as anywhere else in the country, according to the survey's results (14%).

 

 

And in the South, it's all about getting the most out of your meat — they're the most likely to repurpose their leftovers into an entirely new dish (30%), rather than putting in a sandwich like 32% of Northeasterners or simply reheating it to eat as is like the Midwest does (31%). 

"While food can look very different across cultures, it is actually more universal than people realize," said Trevlyn Trevino Carson, Marketing Manager at JBS Foods."Dishes that are prepared and served in different ways all start with the same basic ingredients, from beef to veggies and even noodles. Each culture puts its own unique spin on these common ingredients."

When asked to name their favorite type of cuisine, respondents most commonly cited Mexican, Italian, and Chinese.

But surprisingly, the panel's favorite beef dishes in the country don't come from any of those traditions.

Instead, the list was topped by a three-way tie between Korean Bulgogi (32%), Russian stroganoff (32%) and Philly Cheesesteaks (32%).

Over the years of working with different Amazon Seller clients as an Agency, we came across the budget limited request on a few occasions. Here is how to do Amazon PPC management when there is a limited budget spend.

Not just with starting sellers

The request is not just the starting Sellers (who still have their Amazon sales cashflow to be straightened out) who ask for this. A number of hitched and mono-product Sellers can fall back to this method of budgeting, die to their quantitative cash flow structure.

Either way, this kind of restriction of Amazon PPC calls for certain changes to be made to the classic PPC Campaign Structure. After all, you will be deliberately limiting the number of impressions your Ads will be receiving.

It's best for business if you make all of these impressions count.

Step 1: Three Keystones of Good Amazon PPC Ads

Spoiler alert — budget is one of them.

To build a strong foundation for a truly effective Amazon PPC Campaign, there are 3 important keystones. Only when worked on together, will they allow a Seller to make the most out of a limited budget.

Amazon Product Detail Page: Quality and Theme

Amazon.com is about letting buyers meet their perfect product. In fact, we've got a whole separate article like this on Amazon SEO. But to keep things simple, Amazon's algorithm will be more likely to regard your ASIN as a good product if you help it out:

The algorithm scans text on the Product Detail Page to index the ASIN against these keywords. Specifically, it draws on:
At least 256 characters from product Title
First 100 characters of every Bullet Point
250 characters from Backend Keywords

If you want to use specific keywords in your limited budget ads — make sure they are indexed. This helps to boost keyword ranking a lot from the get-go.

Product Picture 1. A good picture (that clearly shows your product will catch more eyes out of all customers who were searching for something like it. Thus — better Click Through Rate (CTR). And the algorithm takes note of good CTRs.

Remember: a picture is considered "good" if the product is visible in any adverse conditions. Like on a small smartphone screen, outside, and on a summer sunny day.

Amazon Product Reviews. Other things being equal, be considered trustworthy, an ASIN should have at least 1/10th of the average number of reviews that top 5 competitors boast. If it's less at the moment — the product will likely be losing some conversions from the more risk-avert customers. Even if the product itself is good.

The Amazon PPC Budget

Since this article is all about running Amazon PPC Ads with a limited budget, a Seller will have to work around some limitations manually. For example — she'll have to run a larger/ a few shorter keyword research sessions at the beginning of the PPC Campaign.

Since the limited budget would not give her the luxury of running broad match or Auto campaigns and then study the Search Term Report to get those new targeting keywords and negative keywords out of it.

Amazon Relevant Keyword Research: Targeting Keywords and ASINs

Collecting a pool of relevant target keywords/ASINs is fundamental for the success of a limited budget for the Amazon PPC Campaign.

The more (out of hypothetical 100%) relevant keywords/ASINs you find during the research phase — the more you will have to choose from. In fact, this is our Step 2 in preparing to run a tight budget Amazon PPC Campaign.

Step 2: Amazon Keyword Research

Think of it this way: people are already using some words to describe your product. Some search terms used by the average person are pinpoint accurate. Other people use vague ideas and terms when they search. The individual can mean several things at once — but these search terms are used by real people who DO want to find a product like yours nonetheless.

Amazon.com is not easy on giving out those search terms everyone is using. It will only let you know what search terms people used to find your paid Sponsored Ads (via Search Term Report).

Naturally, if you are making your first Sponsored Product campaign — you just don't have that yet. With a limited budget — you aren't likely to get a too rich one in the future either.

Profound keyword research is the major step in preparing for a successful limited budget PPC campaign, as is knowing your negative keywords.

We assume that tight Ads funding indicates that you will also be limited in finances for the starting research. But just in case you are not, remember: there are a few perfectly viable keyword research tools that can help you cut some corners. For a price. "Merchant Words," "Helium 10," to name a few. Try them.

Whichever way you have chosen to get a hold of a pool of relevant potential keywords, they need to be tried out and tested in combo with your specific product before you are confident that you ARE leaving only the truly best-performing ones.

Unfortunately, some budget WILL have to be spent on this trial-and-error — there is no way around this.

But there is a way to make it worthwhile.

Step 3: The Magic of Amazon PPC Optimization

What is a good targeting keyword/ASIN?

ASIN is the one that generates sales at an acceptable cost. As simple as this.

Once you've completed step 2 — you should prepare for testing your discoveries. We are subject to make a clear and Strategy-oriented Amazon PPC Campaign Structure (see: profitwhales dot com, amazon campaign structure) from the get-go.

You may opt to disable the campaigns and ad groups that were built around keywords with worse than expected performance (leave them for later tests), but at least you'll keep them in order.

As for the more aspiring keywords — they must be tried and tested.

We suggest running ads for at least a 7-day period before diving into the results to analyze.

Suppose the target keyword/ASIN in question is a good candidate for full-time Limited Ad Budget allocation. Here's how we do it:

Look at the Impressions.

Impressions are governed by how many people have entered a search term that has triggered your keyword over a given period.

The other factor is the bid: set it too low, and many customers who made it to the Search Results page — may end up being abysmal.

But if you see some good figures (e.g., a hundred impressions a week) — then that keyword is valid. The only question now is…

What's the CTR?

CTR of a keyword indicates how relevant your product title and your Pic 1 is to the text a customer has just typed into her Amazon search console.

Across many incidences, we've come to see that:

CTR below 0.25% is indicative of an irrelevant keyword (or a VERY strong competition present);
CTR between 0,25% and 1% means a keyword is reasonable;
CTR above 1% means that the keyword is highly relevant.

Remember that showing you Ads on Top of Search placement changes all the CTR values dramatically. If that is where your product Ads end up — multiply the above approximate CTR thresholds by 3 to judge the quality of the keyword.

Now that we've picked the more product-relevant keywords, we need to see…

How well CTR converts (at what ACoS).

This is where we start separating the weeds from the grain.

Here's how to make the keyword judgment call:

If a keyword had 10-15 clocks and no sales — discard (pause) it;
If there is a sale, you will need to wait for at least 3 (better 5) sales to make a further judgment, so be patient. Some long-tail, extremely relevant keywords could become a great and cheap sales-generating asset for your limited budget Amazon PPC Campaign. Even if they do generate 5 sales a month — it's worth waiting to find out for certain;
Any keywords that do generate sales but at ACoS 80%+ should be discarded (paused);
For any keywords with ACoS between 80% and your break-even ACoS — it may be worthwhile to lower the bid and have them slow-burning. They are likely to generate you sales in the future at a reasonable ACoS each;
For any keywords that perform at ACoS 5% or less than your break-even level… congrats. These are the candidates to go into your strict budget top-performing exact match type keyword campaigns. They will be the ones that will generate the bulk of your PPC sales.

Panning for Amazon Gold

You can make money on Amazon even with a limited budget, and that is your version of panning for the gold.

The above keyword testing is the only real way to confirm that every keyword's worth it for your product and market circumstances.

Ensure you are giving at least 20% of that limited budget to running more keywords through the test. And direct the other 80% to feed the campaigns that contain already-verified ones that will generate you sales.

You can meet your business goals even within a budget.

Using careful product testing, you will always be on your business goals. This will allow you to hang on and not let go of a chance to eventually discover an even better targeting option that will be perfect for your ASIN.
